TYPES OF RESEARCH

TYPES OF RESEARCH
Research can be classified based on both purpose and method.
(A) Types of Research based on purposes
1. Basic Research
2. Applied Research
3. Evaluation Research
4. Research and development
5. Action Research
(1) Basic (or) Fundamental or Pure Research
The goal of research is the development of theories by the discovery of broad generalization or principle. It is usually carried on in a laboratory situation sometimes with animals as subjects. This type of research has been the activity of psychologists rather than education. The main aim of the basic research is basic research is the discovery of knowledge solely for the sake of knowledge. It has little concern for the application of the findings or social usefulness of the findings. It may result in the discovery of new theory or Development of the Existing theory.
(2) Applied Research
It is undertaken to solve an immediate practical problem and the goal adding to scientific knowledge is secondary. It is a process for studying practical problem and finding a solution to it. The focus is to improve and modify the current practices. It is based on basic research. It is used for the purpose of applying or testing the theory and evaluating it’s usefulness in solving problem.
(3) Evaluation Research
The research done for the purpose of evaluating the success of a programme of a curriculum.
Ex: Is the new curriculum better than the old one?
(4) Research and Development
It is used for the development of effective products.
Ex: The research and development of a textile company aims to find out better textiles.
(5) Action Research
It is focused on immediate and specific application and not on the development of theory or an general application. It's findings have local applicability to particular problem and universal validity. The research is usually done by research specialists, who are subsidized by universities, private or Govt. agencies and professional association.
Comparison between Basic and Applied Research

Basic Research
Applied Research
Purpose is to develop theories.
For solution of problems.
Expert training is a must.
Even average person can carry out.
Controlled condition is very essential.
Even Natural setting can be used for research, limited control is enough.
Complex data analysis and statistical treatment is used.
Simple data Analysis is used.
An exhaustive and thorough knowledge of area is needed.
General understanding of the area is enough.
Conclusions are in the form of generalization.
Conclusions are solution to problem.
